Live Animals
British Airways World Cargo has many years' experience in transporting live animals. Our personnel handle animal shipments everyday and pride themselves in taking as much care of them as you would yourself.
Most animals can be transported by air. The only limitation is the size of the cargo hold. Larger animals, such as horses and cattle, can be carried on one of our freighter services. However, on our passenger services, due to the size of the cargo hold, we carry smaller animals such as cats, dogs, birds, reptiles and tropical fish.
For more information on the transportation of large animals on our freighter network, contact your local British Airways World Cargo office. Further information can also be found on the International Air Transport Association(IATA) website at www.iata.org/whatwedo/live_animals and on the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) website at www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm.
The UK animal transporter authorisation (reference UK/REIGA/T2/00003654) permits British Airways to carry livestock.

Unaccompanied Pets
British Airways World Cargo highly recommends the professional and very experienced services of a Pet Travel Agent if you are considering transporting your pet overseas. Not only can they take care of bookings, documentation, veterinary requirements and travel containers, they can also arrange for your pet to be collected from your home and delivered at the destination as well.
Due to the documentation requirements in Singapore, all bookings to Australia and New Zealand must be made by a Pet Travel Agent.
British Airways World Cargo works closely with a number of Pet Travel Agents, for more information on the full range of services they can offer you, please contact your local Pet Travel Agent who can make all the booking arrangements directly with British Airways World Cargo on your behalf, or on one of the following (UK only):

All bookings of Cats and Dogs into India must be accompanied by a Veterinary Certificate (Health) as per the format prescribed by the Government of India. Please click the links below to find downloadable versions of the certificates.

The certificate needs to be completed by the Veterinary officer in the Country of origin. The officially signed and stamped certificate then needs to accompany the pet Cat or Dog.
Pets Travel Scheme
You take care of the preparations, we will look after your pets.
British Airways is part of the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs' (DEFRA) Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), commonly known as the Pet's Passport, and now we can transport your pet from select cities.
PETS allows cats and dogs from certain countries to enter the UK without the need to go through the usual 6 months quarantine, as long as they meet certain conditions. It also allows people in the UK to take their pet cats and dogs away to these countries and bring them back with no quarantine restrictions, again as long as certain conditions are met.
This information has been created to provide pet owners with a guide as to how they may prepare their pet for air travel and take advantage of the PETS scheme with British Airways.
If you require any further information on PETS you can either contact your government-authorised Veterinary Surgeon (vet) or refer to the list of useful contacts.
Taking care of your pet's welfare
Transporting your pet cat or dog can be a worrying experience. With
British Airways you have the reassurance of knowing that you are dealing with experienced professionals and when your pet flies with us it will be in safe and caring hands.
In our experience most pets travel very well by air, however conditions at airports are naturally noisy and filled with unusual smells such as aircraft fumes. And on long flights pets can suffer from stiffness especially if their container is not large enough.
Container Requirements
You must have a correctly sized container otherwise we may have to refuse to take your pet. The following requirements must be met:
- The container must be large enough for the pet to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural manner. Your pet will be in the container for some time and therefore, it should be as comfortable as possible
- The container must be strong enough to protect your pet during transport, be secure enough to contain it and have sufficient ventilation on all four sides, to ensure the air quality in the container will not deteriorate
- The door must be secured in such a manner that it will not open accidentally or your pet cannot open it during handling and transport
- Your pet's nose and paws should not be able to fit through any ventilation opening or door mesh
- The container must have a water pot and a food container accessible from the outside
- Fibreboard or wiremesh containers are not suitable for air transportation
Please click here for the pet container size calculator
Most pet stores and many kennels sell containers or you can have one made to measure to the International Air Transportation Association specifications.
Flying into the UK via London
What you need to do and when
The six month rule:
Your pet may not enter the UK under PETS until six months have passed from the date that your vet took the blood sample which led to a successful test result (see below). Once the vet
has signed the PETS certificate and that six month period has passed, the PETS certificate is valid and your pet may enter the UK.
In order to bring your pet cat or dog into the UK under the PETS scheme you must :
- Microchip your pet.
This must be done by your vet before any of the other PETS scheme requirements are met, as the microchip is the means by which your pet will be identified at each of the following stages (the microchip should meet ISO standard 11784 or annex A to ISO standard 11785 - otherwise you should provide your own microchip reader)
- Ensure you have your pet vaccinated.
Once your pet has had a microchip fitted it will then need to be vaccinated against rabies
- Make sure your pet's blood has been tested.
30 days after the vaccination you will need to have a blood test carried out to ensure that the vaccine has given an adequate level of protection against rabies
- Get a PETS certificate.
Six months after the blood test has been conducted you can then apply for a PETS certificate from a government-authorised Veterinary Surgeon (vet). Your local vet can advise you on this
- Have your pet treated for tapeworm and ticks
24-48 hours before your pet travels to the UK you must have your pet treated for tapeworm and ticks. Any qualified vet can do this, however you must ensure that they issue an official certificate of treatment. Without this certificate your pet will not be released to you under the PETS scheme but will need to go into temporary quarantine (at your expense) until all treatments have been completed successfully
- You must be travelling on one of the routes listed below.
If your pet should fail the PETS check
If your pet fails on tick and tapeworm documentation it will be taken to nearby kennels where it will be re-treated before release. If your pet fails on vaccination/blood test or residence requirements it will need to go into quarantine and you will be required to make the necessary arrangements. Please note - British Airways will not be held responsible for any costs incurred.

Travelling with Guide Dogs or Assistance Dogs
If you need to travel with your service animal it must be compliant with the Pet Travel Scheme and can only travel in the aircraft cabin on specified DEFRA approved routes. For travel, into the UK, in the cabin, your first point of entry must be either London Heathrow or London Gatwick.
This is what you need to do to prepare your Guide Dog/Assistance Dog for travel:
- Bring a dog car safety harness or equivalent to secure your dog during take off and landing (a collar and lead will not be acceptable for this)
- On longhaul flights, we suggest you bring a fleece/vet bed for your dog
- You need to contact DEFRA, who require a faxed copy of all relevant documentation prior to travel
- Refer to the government website of the country to which you’re travelling for any additional entry requirements or documentation that may need completing
- Contact British Airways at least seven days prior to travel to notify us that you wish to travel with a Guide Dog/Assistance Dog
- Check-in for your flight at an airport check-in desk in order to complete travel documentation and formalities prior to going through airport security
For further information about travelling with Guide Dogs/Assistance Dogs visit www.guidedogs.org.uk
If you do not meet all of these requirements your dog may still be transported, as cargo, in the aircraft hold as explained in the general Pet Travel Scheme information.
